EWG is a non-profit organization dedicated to using the power of information to protect human health and the environment.

To that end, EWG has built the Skin Deep database. Skin Deep is an online safety guide for cosmetics and personal care products. EWG's aim was to fill in where companies and the government leave off - companies are allowed to use almost any ingredient they wish, and our government doesn't require companies to test products for safety before they're sold. EWG's scientists built Skin Deep to be a one-of-a-kind resource, integrating their in-house collection of personal care product ingredient listings with more than 50 toxicity and regulatory databases.

The Skin Deep database provides safety ratings for nearly a quarter of all products on the market - 32,036 products with 7,697 ingredients. The ratings range from 0 to 10, with the identified risk increasing with the larger ranking numbers. Skin Deep also breaks these rankings down into the following ranges

- 0-2 Low Hazard
- 3-6 Moderate Hazard
- 7-10 High Hazard
